Another new project !

I'm absolutely in love with this book ! It is full of amazing quilts in bright colors ! A real explosion of joy !

Among all the wonderful quilts of this book I would like to make someday, there is especially this one I admired so much when I saw it on Sarah's blog. She found her inspiration for it in a similar old quilt seen in Gwen Marston's book Liberated String Quilts.

Here are the first blocks of my own. I've mixed all sort of fabrics, modern, Kaffe Fassett, 30's , reproduction and scraps of all kind of projects.

What a mess in my sewing room ! In a few days all my fabrics will be out of the drawers !

Whirligig hexagons

It seems that I'm in my 30's period.... a few weeks ago, a friend of mine gave me samples of "Recess", a retro line from American Jane.

I was looking for what to do with them when I received in the mail box "Star quilts, outside the box", an out of print book devoted to blocks published from 1928 to 1961 in the Kansas City Star (I discovered this book thanks to a post from the blog Linen and Raspberry).

When a saw a whirligig hexagon quilt in the book, I had found the solution.. I had to make a whirligig quilt with my fabrics !

Courthouse steps

My Courthouse Steps quilt has grown since November. The goal was to use only scraps. That is the case but for now I'm laking of strips to carry on the job. I can stop here or wait for new scraps... What do you think ?

30's !

"Now that its spring the 30's fabric call me!" Kathie said in her newest post. You are not alone, Kathie, me too!!! Since a few days 30's fabrics are on my cutting table too.

A few weeks ago, a friend of the web sent me a lot of 30's fabric scraps. Thanks to her, what a great discovery !

These colors are so fresh, it's a real pleasure to play with them when spring is singing all around us !

That is the first time that I'm using this kind of fabrics and I feel that it will not be the last one !

DJ in progress

Here is my oldest work in progress (I do not call it UFO because even if it remained many times aside during several months, I've never really abandoned it). I love Jane Stickle's quilt so much that if I could finish only one quilt in all my life, it would be this one !

I started it for the first time in 2005 by machine, made a few blocks, then started again by hand one year later. This method suited me better for smaller pieces.

Today I have 114 blocks and 10 triangles, and my goal is to finish the top or at least the center this year...That's my challenge for 2009 !

Rolling star

Did you see the newest collection of fabrics of Polly Minick and Laurie Simpson ? I'm in love with it, especially with a panel inspired by an antique quilt in the collection of the designers.

It would have been easier to buy the panel and to quilt, no ?

but I'm crazy enough to try to piece by hand my own blocks, intricate but relaxing... As usual, don't know how big will be this new project and how many blocks I will be sewing...

Tree

In a post, Janet talked us about the importance of making a test block when we are starting a new quilt. This block was precisely a test.

I love so much this kind of block that I wanted to make a whole quilt with trees, but was not happy with the size of the tiny pieces. That explains why this block was put aside for a while.

But when I wanted to make a little quilt the other day, the idea came in my brain : this tree all alone in a drawer will be a nice center for a mini! In no time the quilt was pieced and the quilting done....
